Do you know that in 1950, a vegetable vendor from Muzaffarnagar, Mohammad Yasin, won the first case for the right to freedom of practice, and that too in the Supreme Court. This case is deeply related to the controversy over writing Muslim names on handcarts in Muzaffarnagar today. When a shopkeeper is asked to write his Muslim name in capital letters, he is being isolated in the market. This is not his choice. He is being told to do so. This in itself becomes a case of economic boycott. The administration of Muzaffarnagar may say that this is being done for the sake of order because Kanwar pilgrims often get confused and a dispute occurs. Pilgrims carrying Kanwar are not intolerant.
