Transliteration

The dua is transliterated as allahumma innee a’udhu bika minal-hammi walhazani, wal’ajzi walkasali, walbukhli waljubni, wa dhala’id-dayni wa ghalabatir-rijaal.

Allahumma inni a uzu bika minal hammi means O Allah, I seek refuge in You from grief and sadness, from weakness and laziness, from miserliness and cowardice, from being overcome by debt and overpowered by men [people].

Allahumma inni Auzubika Minal Hammi Hadith

Anas ibn Maalik (رضي الله عنه) reported: The Prophet (ﷺ) used to say: O Allah! Verily, I seek refuge in You from al-Hamm (worry) and al Hazan (sorrow), from al-‘Ajz (inability) and al-Kasal (laziness), from al-Bukhl (stinginess) and al-Jubn (cowardice), from Dhala’id-Dain (the burden of debt) and Ghalabatir-Rijal (being overpowered by men).[Reported by al-Bukhari, nos. 2893, 5425, 6363, 6369; and Muslim reported some (portion) of it, no. 2706]

Terminologies

• Al-Hamm: Worry and unease about future losses or troubles.
• Al-Hazn: Pain felt in the heart over past events or losses.
• Al-‘Ajz: Feeling of helplessness when falling behind in good deeds.
• Al-Kasl: Laziness, avoiding tasks despite having the ability.
• Al-Bukhl: Greed or miserliness, hoarding wealth and not spending it, even on obligatory matters.
• Al-Jubn: Cowardice, being too afraid to do what is right.
• Dhala’l ad-dain: Burden of debt that weighs heavily on a person.
• Ghalabati al-rijaal: Humiliation of being overpowered or oppressed unjustly.

Explanation Of The Hadith

This Hadith is about asking Allah for protection from eight things:

The first and second: The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “O Allah! I seek refuge in You from worry and sorrow.” Worry and sorrow both hurt the heart. Worry is about the future, while sorrow is about the past.

The third and fourth: The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “O Allah! I seek refuge in You from inability.” This means seeking protection from not being able to do things, which is the opposite of having the ability to do them.

Inability means not being able to fulfill important responsibilities, especially in worship, because of committing sins. Sins create obstacles and prevent us from doing our duties to Allah.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) also said, “And I seek refuge in You from laziness.” Laziness is connected to inability. It’s when we don’t feel like doing good deeds even though we can.

It’s like preferring to rest instead of doing what’s right because we lack motivation and desire for goodness.

The fifth and sixth: The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “I seek refuge in You from stinginess and cowardice.”

Seeking refuge from stinginess means not giving what you should, like not helping someone in need when you can. Stinginess is not a good quality to have.

Seeking refuge from cowardice means being afraid to do things and hesitating. It’s the opposite of being brave and courageous. Cowardice comes from having a weak and fearful heart, which isn’t good for a believer.

The seventh and eighth: The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “I seek refuge in You from the burden of debt and being overpowered by others.”

Being burdened by debt means feeling weighed down by the money you owe, especially when you can’t pay it back, especially when people are demanding payment.

Being overpowered by others means letting other people control you, using force or being unfair. It’s not good when others have too much power over you.

Every pair of challenges in this supplication has a connection:

Anxiety and sadness are linked because they both cause pain to the soul. Anxiety is worrying about future troubles, while sadness comes from past regrets or missed opportunities.

Incapability and laziness go hand in hand because they both result in missing out on opportunities. Incapability means not having the ability, while laziness means not having the motivation. Both lead to pain from missed chances.

Cowardice and miserliness are connected because they prevent gaining happiness and fulfillment. Cowardice stops us from pursuing things we love, while miserliness stops us from sharing wealth and experiencing joy. Both traits cause pain.

A heavy debt and being overpowered by others are linked because they both burden the soul. Debt burdens us financially, while being overpowered by others makes us feel helpless. Both situations cause suffering.
