“O Allah, guide me among those whom You have guided,
Grant me security among those you have granted security,
Turn to me in friendship among those on whom You have turned in friendship,
And bless me in what You have bestowed,
And save me from the evil of what You have decreed.
And he can never be humiliated whom you have befriended.
And he can never be disgraced whom you have supported
Blessed are You, O Lord, and Exalted.”
Narrated Al-Hasan ibn Ali  The Messenger of Allah  taught me some words that I say during the witr. (In the supplication of the witr.) They were:
“O Allah, guide me among those whom You have guided,
Grant me security among those you have granted security,
Turn to me in friendship among those on whom You have turned in friendship,
And bless me in what You have bestowed,
And save me from the evil of what You have decreed.
And he can never be humiliated whom you have befriended.
And he can never be disgraced whom you have supported
Blessed are You, O Lord, and Exalted.”
Sunan Abu Dawud, Book 8, 1420-Sahih
( Also in : Sunan Nasaii Vol. 2, Book 20, 1746-Sahih
Sunan ibn Majah, Vol. 1, Book 5, 1178-Sahih)
It’s a beautiful comprehensive dua, divided into various statements. Let’s learn about the words in it to get the essence of this dua.
The first part of the dua is اللَّهُمَّ اهْدِنِي فِيمَنْ هَدَيْتَ asking Allah for guidance, “O Allah, guide me among those whom You have guided”,
• Why is guidance asked in the first part?
 Because if we are guided only then will we be successful.
“Mankind was one single nation, and Allah sent Messengers with glad tidings and warnings; and with them He sent the Book in truth, to judge between people in matters wherein they differed; but the People of the Book, after the clear Signs came to them, did not differ among themselves, except through selfish contumacy. Allah by His Grace Guided the believers to the Truth, concerning that wherein they differed. For Allah guided whom He will to a path that is straight.” [Quran, Surah Al Baqarah 2:213]
“The fools among the people will say: “What hath turned them from the Qibla to which they were used?” Say: To Allah belong both east and West: He guideth whom He will to a Way that is straight.” [Quran, Surah Al-Baqarah 2:142]
“A group He has guided, and a group deserved to be in error; (because) surely they took the Shayatin (devils) as Awliya (protectors and helpers) instead of Allah, and consider that they are guided” [Quran, Surah al-A‘raaf 7:30]
The Quranic verses given above on hidayat or guidance means that Allah is the Only one who can guide us. His Guidance is the Only guidance we need. If He was not to guide us, we will go astray and we will be the losers and will be doomed on the Day of Judgment.
The 2nd part of the Dua وَعَافِنِي فِيمَنْ عَافَيْت means asking Allah for security, “Grant me security among those you have granted security”.
Security from evil, bad health, misfortune, loss of loved ones and to provide overall security so that we can live a healthy productive life which enables us to do good deeds.
The third part of the dua is وَتَوَلَّنِي فِيمَنْ تَوَلَّيْتَ, “turn to me in friendship among those on whom You have turned in friendship.
And (remember) the day when the unjust one shall bite his hands saying: O! Would that I had taken away with the Messenger! O woe is me! Would that I had not taken such a one for a friend! Certainly, he led me astray from the reminder after it had come to me. Ah! The Evil One is but a traitor to man!” (Quran, Surah Al-Furqan 25:27-29)
There are a variety of things that become clear from this ayah of Quran. The first thing that becomes clear is the fact that Allah Almighty acknowledges friendship as a factor that is important to the life of a person. Therefore, making friends is not something alien or out of Islam, rather friends are acknowledged as a relationship in Islam. The second thing that becomes clear from this verse is the fact that the kind of friend that one has have a great role to play in what a person gets in the life hereafter. Those who get paradise will have their friends as their partners because they all contributed to the life each other and followed the path of righteousness. On the other hand, the ones who receive hell as a reward of their deeds will complain about their friends and lament upon the fact that it is following their unrighteous friends that has resulted in this plight of theirs. Therefore, it is imperative that a Muslim has righteous friends.
And (as for) the believing men and the believing women, they are guardians of each other; they enjoin good and forbid evil and keep up prayer and pay the poor-alms and obey Allah and His Messenger; (as for) these, Allah will show mercy to them; surely Allah is Mighty, Wise.” (Qurah Surah At-Tawbah 9:71)
From this ayah of Quran, the believing men who fulfill all the obligations incumbent upon them are the ones who are on the path of righteousness and who live under the shadow of blessings and mercy of Allah Almighty. Therefore, if a Muslim is to make friends, then the righteous person should be made friends who fulfill all the obligations of Islam and follow the instructions of Allah Almighty and the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad  in every aspect of their life.
The fourth part of the dua is وَبَارِكْ لِي فِيمَا أَعْطَيْتَ, “And bless me in what You have bestowed,”
Alhumdulillah we have been blessed with innumerable blessings
“And if you should count the favors of Allah, you could not enumerate them. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.”
(Quran Surah Nahl, 16:18)
“And whatever of blessings and good things you have, it is from Allah.” (Qurn, Surah Nahl 16:53)
“If you are grateful, I would certainly give you more; and if you are ungrateful, My chastisement is truly severe.” (Quran, Surah Ibrahim 14:7)
This verse should be a reminder for us to be grateful for any kind of blessing we have. We must always be thankful to Allah. This way we will have an increase and barakah in everything we do or have. It will also prove to be productive, beneficial, and rewarding for us in both worlds.
The fifth part of the dua is وَقِنِي شَرَّ مَا قَضَيْتَ that is to ask Allah to save me from the evil of what You have decreed.
There is so much evil around us and if we don’t ask for Allah’s protection from all kinds of harmful things, then we will always be in trouble, discontentment and depression will thereby take over us.
We can’t overcome the evil which is decreed upon us until we seek Allah’s protection. Evil can be in different forms – things, people, intentions, places etc. Things we consider to be good might be evil and harmful for us, for example – evil in company or friendship, evil in haram earning which we earn unknowingly, evil in society in the form of immoral rituals and practices or any activity which we indulge in which has evil repercussions and any kind of evil plot Satan puts in our way.
The sixth part of the dua is إِنَّكَ تَقْضِي وَلاَ يُقْضَى عَلَيْكَ you command, and You are not commanded. This part of the dua does not require any explanation because all commands come from Allah, He is the ultimate commander, The universe works according to His will.
The seventh part of the dua is to ask for respect
وَإِنَّهُ لاَ يَذِلُّ مَنْ وَالَيْتَ وَلاَ يَعِزُّ مَنْ عَادَيْتَ
“And he can never be humiliated whom you have befriended. And he can never be disgraced whom you have supported.”
Allah is the Only One who bestows honor on His servants and gives them respect and reverence in both worlds and He is the only One who humiliates and disgraces in both the world.
Say (O Muhammad SAW): “O Allah! Possessor of the kingdom, You give the kingdom to whom You will, and You take the kingdom from whom You will, and You endue with honour whom You will, and You humiliate whom You will. In Your Hand is the good. Verily, You are Able to do all. (Quran, Surah Al-Imran 3:36)
Ultimate grace and respect is only due from Allah,so this part of dua is very important we seek His Honor and seek His help to gain love and respect in both Duniya and Akhirah .
The last part of the dua is تَبَارَكْتَ رَبَّنَا وَتَعَالَيْتَ. “Blessed are You, O Lord, and Exalted.”
Allah is mentioned as The Most Exalted and Most High in various verse of the Quran.
“..and He is the Most High, the Most Great.” [Quran, Surah Al-Baqarah 2:255]
“Glorify the Name of your Lord, the Most High.” [Quran, Surah Al-A’la 87:1]
Let’s learn this dua and make a practice of reciting this dua in our prayers
